Preparing Quilts for a Show - Cathy B.

1.      Quilt Show requirements

a.       Complete the entry form correctly. The wrong category can often lead to disqualification.

b.      Make sure your quilt satisfies all the requirements for the category. For example, size, percentage of appliqué, etc.

c.       May require a quilt sleeve (see #3 below).

d.      Check to see if the show has a quilt label requirement (see #4 below).

2.      Clean the Quilt

·       Remove all loose threads (snip - don’t pull).

·       Remove pet hair: Use a lint roller to remove hair or fuzz.

·       Wash the quilt if there are smokers in the house.

·       Do not use perfumes or sprays or heavy scented dryer sheets. Air the quilt outside if possible.

·       Press the quilt for a crisp, square presentation.

3.      Add a Hanging Sleeve

Quilt shows hang quilts on poles. Your quilt needs a fabric tube on the back to slide onto the pole.

·       A permanent sleeve may use a coordinating fabric to the quilt face or backing. A temporary sleeve may be of any cotton.

·       There are many tutorials available online – find one that works for you.

·       Be aware of any show limitations or requirements.

4.      Sew a Show Label

Shows need to know who made the quilt.

·       Make a fabric label of any shape, size and design.

·       On the label include

o   The name of the quilt

o   Your Name

o   Name of Quilter (if someone else quilted)

o   Year completed

o   City and State

·       Sew the label to the bottom left corner on the back of the quilt.

·       Cover your contact info with a piece of scrap fabric and a safety pin. This keeps your details secret from the judges.

·       Be aware of any show limitations or requirements

5.      Pack the Quilt

·       Wash your hands: Keep the quilt clean

·       Roll the quilt around a pool noodle or acid-free paper instead of folding it. This prevents hard creases.

·       Use a bag: Place the rolled quilt in a clean, breathable fabric pillowcase or a clear plastic bag.

·       Clearly label the outside of the bag or box with your name, address and phone number.

6.      Placard

Shows often have a small printed card with information about the quilt next to it.

·       Provide information about the quilt. May include

o   Inspiration for making the quilt

o   The pattern name and pattern creator

o   Fabrics used

o   Techniques used

o   Challenges and new skills developed

Be aware of any show limitations or requirements (e.g. size of placard, etc
