Designing Your Own Modern Quilt Block
With Marcia and Sue
Have you been collecting modern quilt patterns?
Do you wish you could make exactly what you want, but not knowing where to begin?
As you may remember, last year, Kate Colleran was at our meeting. She started designing her own patterns by starting with traditional quilt blocks and changing them. Marcia and I have been playing with this idea and have samples to show the group. At the meeting, we will explore how to get started. We will be discussing what makes a quilt modern and writing these ideas down. Then each member will pick a traditional block they like, something with more pieces than a 9 patch. One of my favorite blocks is the weathervane, but for the meeting I will be using Sisters Choice block, a 9 patch with an extra row of half-square triangles at the corners. I have made the block with felt and will be changing parts of it to find what I like using the ideas the group has given us. The group will draw roughly their chosen block. Cut the colored paper into the pieces and then play with the parts of their new design. I would recommend taking a picture with your phone to remember what you chose. We are asking you to make 1 block, or make 4 of the new design so that it measures 14” or more. The new modern block(s) are due at the January meeting. If you really love it, go ahead and make it into a quilt. We are only asking you to piece it for now. It may be used for an April Challenge we have planned.
Supplies:
· bring 3 different pieces of colored paper,
· paper cutting scissors
· 1 piece of paper or graph paper for some notes and ideas.
