This class is centered on my quilt, We've Never Met, but I've Been an Admirer,
https://www.heidiparkes.com/gallery#/weve-never-met-but-ive-been-an-admirer/
which I began in anticipation of teaching in France alongside natural dye expert Edie Ure. She mailed me some beautiful naturally dyed cotton, linen, silk, and velvet. Dreaming of our trips to the local flea market, I contributed lace, toile, and some vintage patchwork. When it came to the composition, I remembered a photo that I took of my paint palette when creating an aerial view painting. It was the perfect inspiration.Students are invited to mix some paints in advance of class to connect with the joy and discovery of color. They will also receive some pre-recorded instruction on stitches, knots, and concept. Then on Zoom, we will notice the complexities of color relationships while we appliqué round shapes onto our quilt tops. I will share insights on composition, efficiency, and the joy of a lighthearted quilt top. This class is beginner friendly and simultaneously engaging and playful with new approaches to familiar techniques for experienced quiltmakers.
This one-day class will focus on:
visible hand piecing
basic knots and stitches
small appliqué
large appliqué
reverse appliqué (and working with velvet)
accented appliqué (adding a 3rd layer to the applique sandwich, like lace)
working with lace, velvet, and silk
